This piece of writing is for all the coffee lovers out there! Have you been craving 100% original, freshly brewed coffee amid these chilly months? If so, then follow our steps, tips, and tricks to produce authentic coffee at home that is too affordable using a Moka pot.

If you have not heard of it before, then Moka pot is a stovetop brewer. It was built in 1933 by Luigi De Ponti, which quickly gained popularity in Italy. Its effective method of brewing fresh coffee then later spread worldwide, making it every coffee lover’s favourite tool. It is fairly simple to use but might seem a bit complicated when you first get it in your hands.

How to Use a Moka Pot

The Moka pot is segmented into three parts. The bottom space is for water. It is then covered with the filter basket on top of which you evenly place your ground-up coffee. Once these two sections are settled, you place the tall section of your brewer to the bottom parts – the coffee collector.

They are also available in various sizes that can produce 1, 2, and 6 coffee shots, in a single successful brewing session. Before we tell you how to use it, please make sure that you purchase the right-sized Moka pot for yourself. If you are the only coffee lover in your family, then you might want to go for the single-shot size.

You cannot make a single shot in a 2 shot or 6 shot Moka pot. The quantity of the ground coffee you put in there has to fill out that space entirely. If you put in less coffee, you might not get the hot drink of your desired taste.

Before Getting Started with Your Moka Pot

There are a few things you might want to do before you use your Moka pot. If you are using it for the very first time in your life, then keeping a mental note of these simple pre-tasks can actually help you master the art of coffee brewing.

Before pouring in the water at the bottom segment of your pot, make sure your water is not freezing cold. Instead, you could pre-heat it before brewing your coffee. Pour in previously warmed water into the pot so that you can quickly end the brewing process. Pre-heated water will not take time to heat up again inside the pot; hence the brewing procedure will begin shortly after setting up everything and putting your Moka pot on the stove.

The ground coffee you put inside the second compartment must not contain unbroken cocoa pieces. This will complicate the brewing process as the Moka pot is an expert in brewing coffee, not grounding cocoa.

Before Getting Started with Your Moka Pot

Use coffee that is mostly grounded up. Fine-grinds are the best option you could go for, but that may require an expensive machine. Here, we are trying to minimize your costs and provide you with some fresh, homemade coffee, which might cost you many bucks in cafes and other restaurants. Therefore, grind your cocoa beans as finely as you can to get coffee that is smooth and rich in texture.

The third tip is to use tasty and safe drinking water for your coffee. The water you use should be low on calcium content and free from contaminants. Many people make the mistake of using hard, sink water in their pots. If you do not drink water that runs directly from your faucet, then do not put it in your Moka pot as well.

You must be thinking that the water is to be boiled anyways inside the pot, killing the bacteria it contains. Well, do not go for this kind of two-in-one process. Make your coffee diligently with the use of clean drinking water. Because remember, most of your drink is actually the water you use to make it. The coffee content extracted is not much, as it is fresh, strong, and bitter. Thus, to make a delicious coffee cup using a Moka pot, take care not to make these tiny mistakes.

Handling the Moka Pot – The Much Awaited Task

Now that we are done enlightening you about the Moka pot and the little steps to perfecting your freshly brewed coffee cup, let us jump into the actual procedure. First of all, you wash your Moka pot and pat it dry with a cloth. No water should be left on the pot after washing it as it could make the cocoa go damp even before you put it on the stovetop.

Fill in the bottom last compartment with pre-heated water. Afterwards, cover it with the filter basket and fill up the ground coffee compartment entirely. You can even out the amount using the knives of your fingers, however, you like. Meanwhile, put a cloth/pad inside your freezer.

Once the bottom part is filled, screw it up with the top compartment, where your freshly brewed coffee is stored. Ensure you do not pack it too tightly as there will be enough pressure inside the pot already.

After putting together all the parts, place them on your stovetop under medium heat. Leave the lead open until you see brown steam. This is supposed to take 5-10 minutes. The steam will become lighter in colour and take a yellowish tone. You can see the coffee being extracted at the bottom of the top compartment when you see that.

Once you see that occur, remove your Moka pot from the stovetop and close the lid. When you see most of the coffee (about 80%) is making its way up to the spout, you can understand that the Moka pot had been brewing coffee with the aid of its in-built pressure.

You would not want to overstrain your beans, hence quickly take out the cold pad from your freezer and put it around your pot. This will bring down the pressure, and your beans will be just fine. If you put it under pressure for too long, then you might turn your coffee into a bitter nightmare.

After cooling it down, pour yourself a nice cup of brewed coffee. You might want to add milk or sugar for taste. By this time, you should be super proud of yourself for making 100% authentic coffee straight from home.
